New York Herald Reporter's Presentation to A. W. Drinkwater, 1911Notes
Alpheus Drinkwater became the first weatherman at the Manteo Weather Station when it was opened initially in 1904 (the Kitty Hawk Weather Station was simultaneously closed). Drinkwater, also a telegraph operator, sent out various news pieces from reporters in 1903 and 1908 and, in 1908, accompanied reporters from Manteo to Kill Devil Hills to witness the Wrights' test flights. Reporter Van Ness Harwood evidently sent Drinkwater photos from Kitty Hawk reproduced in the World with this nicely decorated squirrel, acorn, and camera logo or illustration.
